I will then edit the Word document that contains all the tips and has been posted on this page here: http://hobnonline.com/groups/hobn_yaletown
During our meeting we agreed that we each practice one of the tips during our networking this week and bring back our experience to the next Yaletown meeting this coming Thursday to share how it went and what we observed or learnt.
Which one of the networking tips are you going to practice?
I look forward to continuing our discussion here and/or on Thursday at our next meeting!

For your convenience here are the tips of the group:
What To Do or Not To Do in Networking - From the Seasoned Networkers at HOBN Yaletown
• Network without expectations and give freely. It will come back to you one way or another
• Be “other-focused”
• Listen well to what the other person has to say and for how you might be able to help him/her (there’s a reason why we have two ears and only one mouth!)
• Don’t pitch!
• Don’t network more than you can follow up on
• Go slow - take time to build relationships and to get to know the other person really well. Remember, people do business with those they like and trust.
• Exercise compassion – many people are dealing with anxiety in a networking setting. You may help them be at more ease if you can be compassionate and genuinely kind to them
• Be authentic and genuine in your interactions. People sense it when you’re not.
• Set an intention for your networking meeting, for example
o To make 3 new connections and say hi to 5 people you know
o To have 4 meaningful conversations – with new or familiar people
o To listen first and speak later
o Not to be attached to the outcome of any conversations
• Look out for people that are new to the particular group or meeting and approach them; make them feel welcome into the setting/group
• If applicable let the other person know that you may be a great resource for them so they can connect with you if and when it may become necessary
• Follow-up is essential – it builds credibility and trust.8 months ago -

Please note that we have a new welcome procedure in place:
We still have the two normal breakfast options, the $7.50 or the $9.50 deal, plus tax. The $7.50 keeps to be the minimum purchase in support of our venue hosts. The only thing that changes is that there will be two places for us to pay for our breakfast depending on what we'd like to have:
For the $7.50 option, with regular coffee or your choice of teas, paid by cash only:
If you want the $7.50 deal ($8.50 incl. HST) with a regular coffee or your choice of tea, please go directly upstairs where Bonnie, our first volunteer cashier, will take your cash and will hand you a cup for your beverage. Coffee, a selection of teas and breakfast items will be set up in the meeting area. Receipts will also be available for you when you check in with Bonnie. Once you’ve paid for your breakfast you may go in and grab your seat and breakfast.
For everything else, e.g. the $7.50 breakfast with specialty coffees/teas, the $9.50 deal, or if you wish to pay with your credit card:
Please go directly to the counter downstairs where you will be ordering and receiving your breakfast. Once you have your breakfast in your hands, please come upstairs to our meeting area and join the crowd.
With this new process we hope for a smoother and faster process of purchasing breakfast and for the meeting to start in a timely fashion, which translates in to more time for networking afterwards!!!
Doors to the Buzz open at 7:00am, the meeting will start at 7:15am.
Please note: It will no longer be possible for attendees to first go upstairs, grab a seat and then go back down to purchase breakfast. Buying breakfast will be the first thing we all do, and then we will be granted access to the meeting space.
Here's to another fun and effective HOBN meeting.
Stay safe, dry and warm today!

I appreciate the networking commitment you chose, Craig. Mine for this week is to be mindful about the number of events I attend so that I can do proper follow-up.
I actually decided to skip one meeting tonight and use the time to do some more follow-up on other meetings from the past couple of weeks - I've fallen behind with my follow-up and that does not feel good. Not following up is like wasting an opportunity to build or deepen the relationships with the people I connected with.
