We were standing room only and goosebumping all over the place as one heart-based entrepreneur after another shared a story of inspiration, triumph over adversity and bold new paradigm visions unfolding. And holy guacamole did we eat well! 20 food exhibitors doled out their best, with all leftovers either going to feed the vulnerable community in the DTES or composted by Bokoeco for a zero waste event. Pics are circulating on Twitter with #copiavan and #T4F.
Advance tickets are available now for our May 21 and June 8 events in the series, each only getting better. LOCOVORE RESTAURANT SEEKS CREATIVE PASTRY COOK –
A SWEET OPPORTUNITY
We are sustainable epicures with a strong commitment to local, organic and natural foods and take pride in being accommodating to allergies and sensitivities. We work with alternative as well as conventional ingredients for much of our menu: whether wheat and rye or gluten free, vegan or healthy omnivore, our guests know they can rely on the care and flavour we put into every dish.
We are a thriving family-owned business. Some of our staff have been with us since we opened our doors and many for 5 to 10 years, a retention rate that speaks to our warm, collaborative culture and the quality of our food and customer relationships.
Our new Pastry Cook will be responsible for the consistent preparation of a variety of scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, pies, tarts and cakes. We have several signature pastry dishes you will need to learn to prepare but then you are invited to be creative within our palette of local and organic ingredients to expand our menu and our loyal following.
One secret of our success has always been putting the right people on the team and then giving them the freedom to play. You will work 35 – 45 hours per week preparing both finished goodies on your workdays and uncooked ones for other cooks to bake on your days off. When you choose to work the required hours is up to you - as long as we have fresh scones and cinnamon rolls for every breakfast and pies and cakes for every lunch and dinner, and peak holiday and event periods have adequate coverage.
To be our new Pastry Cook, you are:
- Someone who values team, collaboration and workplace culture and will know a good gig when you see it;
- A natural in the kitchen, with a comfortable feel for a wide range of ingredients and cuisines, able to delivery equally delicious results in any season;
- Allergy- and Plant-Based Nutrition-aware and comfortable with a variety of flours, fats and binders;
- Well trained in Pastry fundamentals with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a busy restaurant or bakery kitchen;
- Open to preparing a couple of audition pastries on our site as part of your second interview, should you progress to that stage;
- Excited at the thought of improving your community, one natural sweet at a time.
Please make sure your application package speaks to your specific Pastry knowledge – not just positions you have held but menus and recipes – and also says something about your passions and interests to give us a sense of the recipes you might like to create. Please know we’re also looking for evidence of a good sense of humour, a demonstrated respect and caring for good teammates and outstanding references.
This is a full time, permanent position with a professional salary, extended health and dental benefits, employee meals and special employee pricing, 3 weeks vacation to start, some professional development funds and possible performance incentives for the right person.
If your experience, values and personality are a fit for this position, please direct your resume in PDF form to our values-driven recruiting partner, Alanna Fero (www.alannafero.com) via naturalpastry@valuesdrivenhiring.biz with the subject line PASTRY COOK.
We thank all applicants for their time and care but regret that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.8 months ago -

Between Meetup, HOBN and direct emails to me, we have 45 RSVPs which should translate to a good 32 attendees, up from 28 at our last meeting. Great spirits and great ventures, all in one - you know these are people you want to meet!
I'm excited to report that I've negotiated an ongoing arrangement with the Canadian Memorial Centre for Peace (Burrard & 16th) to be one of our principal venues starting with lunch on May 16 and they're giving us their beautiful Great Hall... 20 foot ceilings, 15 foot windows, a gorgeous hearth... so warm and welcoming, you'll want to bring guests... room for us to grow to 40 per meeting with lots of space... plus free parking!
To get ready for your best networking experience possible, may we suggest:
1. Put addresses and directions in your Smartphone
2. Where you have to pay using a parking meter, drop a twonie in to get started and then email or text yourself the meter number to add time - then, if you make some great connections and want to mingle past two hours, you're safe and won't get a ticket
3. Bring plenty of business cards, marketing table display materials and, if you like, a door prize
4. Prepare to deliver your message in a powerful 90 seconds or less... Please see http://copiaspirit.com/events/introducing-yourself and http://copiaspirit.com/events/being-prepared-for-networking for helpful tips
5. Please take a moment to send our www.meetup.com/copianetwork link to 2 or 3 awesome heart-based people you know. They don't even have to be entrepreneurs, just folks you think would "get us" and help us pass the word. We've gone from 10 to 130 members in just a few weeks, but I'd like us to be 200 by June 1. With your support, I know we can do it!

Thank you so much to everyone who has spread the word or sent a good vibe our way and thank you especially to Monika Becker, Maggie McKee and Joseph Eliezer who just "got" us right away and have become Copia regulars.
We had a cozy 28 people this morning (including lots of new faces who need to learn about HOBN and your businesses!) and, while the meeting ended at 9am as promised, over half the people stayed to build relationships past 9:30, and 7 people were still there at 10:15. By rough count, over 50 referrals were generated and several joint ventures got cooking.
Here is just some of today's feedback:

"If I didn't know I got more referrals at the last Copia event than anywhere else I go, I wouldn't be able to believe this is even a business meeting. I feel excited all day after I come here." - Kelty McKerracher

Given our social venture/spirit venture mandate, we feel it is critical to be able to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other specialty diets and most importantly to have access to real, fresh food - yet come in at the $10 breakfast and $15 lunch that HOBN chapters favour. That hasn't been easy to find even in the city but it's proving even harder in the wider region.
