About me personally: Irrepressible idea generator. Life long learner. Gemini. Introvert (INTP). Toastmaster. Pescetarian. Former sailor. Fashion challenged.
Aside from 3 short-lived “real” jobs, I’ve been in business for myself ever since I cornered the babysitting market on Elmhurst Street when I was 12.
My businesses have ranged from video store to real estate to freelance computer programming to instructional design and training to “flipping” mobile homes. (As in buying, fixing and re-selling…not over-turning.)
In 2008, I sold everything I owned and took a 2 year mini-retirement. I bought a sailboat with my partner and traveled 1,000 miles down the Mexican Baja (after only 3 days of sailing lessons.) No one died! -

One of my favorite movies is Serendipity..... Whoooooa! Felt good getting that off my chest, I've been holding that in forever, very embarrassing! More importantly, I am a Mortgage Broker, living in Langley and working hard every day to build my business through staying educated on new products and regulations, networking and most importantly, referrals. Referrals are critical for success in this business which makes it so important to do the best job possible for your client. This means making sure they get the best mortgage (which doesn't always mean the lowest rate) with an enjoyable, stress free experience. This also means treating everyone like they are your number one priority, which if you really think about it, they are.
I enjoy doing my job every day, it has it's ups and downs of course like for example..... does anyone meet anywhere other than coffee shops these days? I am of the rare breed of people out there who do not drink coffee. Do you know how many venti ice waters I have had in the last week let alone the last couple of years? But the smile on peoples faces when they get approved for the mortgage on that home they wanted so bad, or when they find out you can help them lower payments and save money, more than makes up for my disdain for the aroma of coffee.
I think a good goal for all of us would be to try and leave a smile on everyone's face as you part ways with them, it makes it that much more likely they will be smiling again next time you see them. Just a thought....
I look forward to meeting all you HOBNers and learning about your various businesses and ideas. It will be fun finding new ways to add value to one another's businesses while working towards our goals.
I will leave you with a quote I read just now, I really like it. " Be yourself, everyone else is taken." Great advice!
Thank you, and please don't tell anyone about my questionable taste in movies. It will be an HOBN secret, for members ears only.

Where Higher Self Meets Bottom Line: Author, Venture Catalyst, Spiritual Business Coach, Life Path Expert, Intuitive Strategist & Keynote Speaker
Alanna Fero (MA, LSC) maintains a highly successful practice providing life purpose and business coaching, career management, leadership development, employee engagement consulting and recruitment services to local and international clients. She is also a popular keynote speaker, television and radio commentator, and author of the well-reviewed book, Love Made Visible: Values-Driven Approaches to Work/Life, its title taken from the Khalil Gibran poem which says that “To labour with love is to know life’s inmost secret / Work is love made visible.” Love Made Visible offers readers the key to unlocking the secrets of how to live a great life and enjoy the abundance brought about by work you feel passionate about doing.
Devoted to principles of self-actualization and Integral Life Practice (with much credit given to the inspitations of Abraham Maslow and Ken Wilber), Alanna loves leveraging the power of interpersonal relationships, provocative dialogue, metaphysical principles and good strategy to improve people’s experience of their lives. She has become known for integrated approaches which create awareness and abundance in equal measure, demonstrating that there is no conflict between deep spiritual connection and material success. Her next book, Many Hands Make Light Work: Soul-Driven Approaches to Making a Living and a Life, is in writing stages now and details stories of the “callings” to a higher purpose for their work/lives that so many of her clients have felt and followed. Chapters also explore her own experiences with following intuitive guidance, including walking the Camino de Santiago, a Pilgrim’s journey and literal metaphor for higher consciousness of life path.
Chances are you might have seen Alanna doing an interview or taking live audience calls on BTV, CBC, The Knowledge Network or WTN in recent years, or heard her regular weekly appearances on the Simi Sara Show. She has been covered or quoted dozens of print and online outlets, including Maclean’s, The National Post, The Montreal Gazette, The Vancouver Sun, The Calgary Herald, The Ottawa Citizen, The New Brunswick Business Journal, Shared Vision Magazine, FOXBusiness, The Examiner, Yahoo HotJobs, and Monster.com. More and more people can also report having heard one of Alanna’s “Soul of Work” and “Generation Hybrid” keynotes for audiences from 10 to 2500 or participated in one of her interactive workshops for corporations and professional associations.
In 2009, Alanna was the only coach in Canada to make the Top 20 in the Women’s Television Network’s “Expert Search” and in Spring 2010, she received five separate nominations for the Women of Worth “Spirit, Success and Soul” award. In 2011, her focus has been on refining the concept of “Spirit Venture,” what she believes to be the deeper extension of social venture, an intersection of karma and commerce, dharma and drive, enterprise which emerges from the soul and which creates abundance for itself and all those it touches by basing its decisions on a call to service of the highest good.
Alanna defines her mission in language both sweeping in its scope and simple in its focus on integrity: “to create spaces, strategies, tools and relationships which joyfully and vibrantly support self-actualizing individuals and progressive organizational cultures to:
- work in innovative, conscious, and loving connection to self and others, putting awareness in action every day
- experience work/life, business and career, as integrative extensions of their highest visions for themselves and the world
- experience achievement, success and abundant reward as the natural outflows of intimately knowing what matters and taking action in alignment with that knowing
- do good in the world and do well for themselves at the same time
- . . . and to lead on this path not by soliciting followers but rather by going first.
Alanna makes her home in Vancouver, Canada, and spends her personal time engrossed in hiking, travel, meditation and preparing gourmet whole foods. Learn more at www.alannafero.com. Email alanna [at] alannafero.com.
