This means my focus is on helping clients plan their transactions and prepare documents to effect changes they need. I don't spend my days arguing in front of a judge or doing the court's boring paperwork.

Primarily, I am there as a sounding board for my clients. They call me up or email with a question that has been causing them stress. I know my clients and I know their businesses, so the trust level is usually quite high, and we get down to the main issue usually quite quickly. Consequently, the bill for such a phone call is quite moderate. The average client only calls me a few times per year.

Occasionally, a client calls me and asks for help with a transaction. Maybe they are buying a business. Maybe they are raising funds for an existing business. Maybe they need help negotiating with a customer or former colleague, and need someone they trust to negotiate on their behalf. In these cases, I first and foremost listen. This in and of itself helps my stressed out clients. Next, we discuss their options for resolving the issue, and the costs and risks associated with each alternative. We discuss budgets and then a timeline and the possible factors that could change both. Based on this I will draft the documents or begin the transaction as discussed, checking in regularly with my client. Thats it.

There is a lot of mystery and fear associated with hiring a lawyer. My goal is to try to take out some of that fear for all of you.

    • Des Dougan You forgot to add the bit about the time spent creating terrible lawyer jokes (that's terrible jokes about lawyers, not jokes about… - you know what I mean!).
